RFID Walmart
 |
In June 2004, the U.S.'s largest retailer, Walmart Stores, announced its RFID Walmart Implementation and expansion plans. Walmart use of RFID tags was intended to be used on cases of consumer goods that are shipped to distribution centres. RFID Walmart implementation deadline was supposed to be Jan2005 which was later declined.
According to news agencies, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s CIO announced that the retail industry would require its top 100 suppliers to put radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on all pallets and cases they ship to its distribution centers and stores. However, soon the RFID Walmart news again was part of the headlines. This time Walmart use of RFID was cancelled. On being asked why RFID Walmart decision was cancelled Walmart refused to give any reasons.
RFID Walmart trial with the Gillette Company was also delayed as both corporations thought that it's not feasible economically. There were other issues too, such as to make sure that RFID Walmart trial boxes are not mixed with other boxes. According to a statement made by RFID Walmart spokesperson, Walmart intends to implement RFID technology by 2006. Read more about Walmart and RFID. |
