Walmart RFID
 |
Walmart RFID have been in news since quite some time now. In June 2004, the U.S.'s largest retailer, Walmart Stores, announced its RFID Walmart Implementation and expansion plans. These Walmart RFID plans were later cancelled.
The Walmart RFID experiment known as smart shelf test with Gillette Company was planned to explore RFID technology and its use to gather information. It got delayed many times. The trial was intended to use RFID technology to keep track of the number of razor blades on a store shelf in Brockton. When Walmart RFID experiment got cancelled it was inferred that that Walmart was backing off its commitment to deploy RFID in stores because of concerns raised by privacy advocates. |

| Since past two years Walmart RFID has been exploring RFID technology and RFID advantages in retail sector. Walmart RFID is conducting this research in collaboration with Auto-ID Center, a nonprofit research organization based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Walmart and other sponsors of the Auto-ID Center think that to implement RFID completely, the time period can get stretched to ten years. This would be when RFID tags would become very low in cost so that companies could afford RFID tags and RFID implementation.
